Google Search Console: A 20-Minute Monthly Routine for Business Owners

Google Search Console is the only free tool that shows you exactly how Google sees your website. You do not need to be technical to use it. Twenty minutes once a month is enough to spot problems early, find easy wins and check whether your SEO work is paying off.

Here is the routine I recommend to every business owner we work with, whether they run a clinic in Faridabad or an online store selling across India.

Before you start: make sure the account is yours

Search Console should be set up under your own Google account, not your agency’s. Add your agency as a user if they need access. If you ever change providers, your data and history stay with you.

1. Performance: are clicks going up? (5 minutes)

Open Performance → Search results and compare the last 3 months with the previous 3 months. Look at four numbers: total clicks, total impressions, average click-through rate and average position.

  • Impressions rising, clicks flat: you are appearing more often but not getting clicked. Improve titles and meta descriptions on your top pages.
  • Clicks falling: open the Pages tab and sort by click difference to see which pages lost traffic.
  • Position improving slowly: normal. SEO usually shows first movement within 90 days and competitive terms take 4 to 6 months.

Then open the Queries tab and look for searches where you rank between positions 8 and 20. These are your quickest wins: the page is close to page one and usually needs better content, a clearer answer near the top or a few internal links.

2. Pages: is Google indexing what matters? (5 minutes)

Open Indexing → Pages. The chart shows indexed and not indexed pages. Scroll to “Why pages aren’t indexed”.

  • Discovered, currently not indexed: Google knows the page exists but has not crawled it. Link to it from your important pages and make sure it is in your sitemap.
  • Crawled, currently not indexed: Google saw the page and decided it was not worth indexing. Usually a sign of thin or duplicate content.
  • Not found (404): old URLs that now break. Redirect them to the closest live page.
  • Duplicate without user-selected canonical: several URLs show the same content. Common with city pages and product filters.

Make sure your money pages, such as your main service pages, are all indexed. If one is missing, use the URL Inspection tool and request indexing after fixing the cause.

3. Sitemaps: is Google reading yours? (2 minutes)

Open Sitemaps. Your sitemap should show “Success” and a sensible number of discovered pages. If it says “Couldn’t fetch”, check the sitemap URL in your browser. Remove old sitemaps that no longer exist.

4. Core Web Vitals: is the site fast enough on mobile? (3 minutes)

Open Experience → Core Web Vitals and look at the mobile report. Most Indian visitors arrive on mid-range Android phones, so mobile is what counts. If URLs are marked “Poor” or “Needs improvement”, note which issue is flagged (LCP, INP or CLS) and pass it to your developer. Large hero images are the most common cause of slow LCP.

5. Manual actions and security: any red flags? (1 minute)

Open Security & Manual Actions. Both should say “No issues detected”. A manual action means Google has penalised part of the site, often because of spammy links. If you ever see one, act on it immediately.

Bonus: links and enhancements (4 minutes)

  • Links: check your top linked pages and top linking sites. Unknown spammy domains are worth noting for a disavow review.
  • Enhancements: check breadcrumbs, FAQ and other structured data for errors.

A simple monthly log

Write down five numbers each month in a spreadsheet: clicks, impressions, average position, number of indexed pages and number of “Poor” mobile URLs. After a few months you will see trends clearly, and you will be able to hold your SEO provider to account with real data.

What this means for businesses in India

Most small and mid-sized Indian businesses never open Search Console, even though it is free. Twenty minutes a month puts you ahead of most local competitors and tells you whether your SEO spend is working. FAQs

Is Google Search Console free?

Yes. It is a free tool from Google. You only need to verify that you own the website.

How often should I check Search Console?

Once a month is enough for most businesses. Check more often after a site redesign, migration or a sudden traffic drop.

What is the difference between Search Console and Google Analytics?

Search Console shows how your site performs in Google Search before people click. Analytics shows what visitors do after they arrive. You need both.
