Zero-Click Search Hit 70% — Here’s the Playbook That Still Drives Traffic
In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, close to the 70% in this post’s title. AI Overviews, featured snippets and instant answers now satisfy a large share of searches on Google’s own page. If your traffic plan still depends on people clicking through, you’re competing for the fewer than one in three searches that still send a click anywhere, and that share has been shrinking. A modern zero click search strategy accepts that reality and builds around it. It also changes a question I hear every week from business owners: whether next quarter’s budget should go into SEO or Google Ads. This playbook covers what zero-click really means, why traffic falls even when rankings hold, what changed in 2026, and the seven moves that still turn visibility into enquiries.
Quick answer: A zero-click search ends on the results page without a click. SparkToro’s 2026 study found 68% of US Google searches end that way. The playbook: earn citations inside AI answers, shift effort to high-intent pages people still click, build branded demand, and report on impressions, citations and conversions instead of raw traffic.
Key takeaways
- SparkToro found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, measured with different data panels.
- When Google shows an AI summary, Pew Research found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one.
- Being cited helps: Seer Interactive found brands cited in an AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited ones.
- Search Console’s Generative AI report shows impressions only, no clicks, so AI visibility needs its own scoreboard.
- Brand searches and ready-to-buy local searches still tend to click through, so build demand for your name.
What does zero-click actually mean in 2026?
A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they need on the results page, from an AI Overview, featured snippet, knowledge panel or People Also Ask box, and never visits a website. SparkToro’s 2026 study, using Similarweb data, found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of the year.
That’s up from 60.45% in 2024, though the two figures come from different data panels, so treat the trend as indicative rather than exact. SparkToro puts the figure a decade ago at around 45%. These are US numbers; treat them as a direction for India, not a measurement.
Informational searches are hit hardest. When Google shows an AI summary, Pew Research found users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits.
This isn’t a temporary glitch. Google’s product direction is to answer more questions on its own page. Brands that adapt still earn visibility and brand impressions; brands that don’t lose both.
Why did your traffic drop even though rankings held?
Because ranking no longer guarantees a click. When an AI Overview or snippet answers the question, the top result gets far fewer clicks than it used to, so you can hold position one and still lose traffic. Many clients I speak to in 2026 see exactly that pattern: rankings stable or better, organic visits down.
The data backs this up. Ahrefs found the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page, based on December 2025 data.
News publishers have felt it sharply: Chartbeat data reported by Press Gazette showed Google search traffic to publishers fell by about a third globally in the year to November 2025.
A useful sanity check: pull a 90-day Search Console comparison of impressions against clicks for your top informational queries. If impressions are flat or up while clicks fall sharply, you have a zero-click problem, not a ranking problem, and more links or technical fixes won’t solve it.
What changed in zero-click search in 2026?
Four things. SparkToro’s new figure showed zero-click searches still rising. Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one experience and added more links inside AI answers. Search Console gained a report for AI visibility, though it shows impressions only. And site owners can now opt out of Google’s AI features altogether, at the cost of that visibility.
On its July 2026 earnings call, Google said it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one seamless Search experience, and that it was sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features.
On 15 October 2026 it went further, showing inline links higher up in AI responses and testing a section that surfaces official websites at the top of an answer.
Google’s Search Generative AI performance reports, rolled out to all sites on 31 August 2026, show how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. They show impressions, not clicks, so they measure visibility rather than traffic.
The same month, Google let site owners opt out of its generative AI features in Search Console. Opted-out sites get no traffic or impressions from those features. With AI Overviews at over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode at over one billion, opting out rarely makes sense for a business that wants to be found.
What’s the zero-click playbook?
Stop fighting for clicks you won’t get and compete where value still flows. These seven moves are the playbook I run for clients adapting to zero-click search. Most of them also strengthen your SEO and generative engine optimisation (GEO) at the same time, because the pages that win citations tend to win the clicks that remain.
Citations are worth chasing. Seer Interactive’s 2026 update found that being cited in an AI Overview earns 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, though still 38% fewer than when no AI Overview appears. As Seer puts it:
A citation is an advantage relative to everyone else on the same AIO-present SERP. It’s not a return to the pre-AIO baseline.
- Optimise for citations, not just clicks. Answer each question in the opening lines of its section. Our guide to getting cited in Google AI Overviews covers how.
- Make impressions and AI visibility your top-of-funnel KPIs, using Search Console’s Performance and Generative AI reports.
- Brand the answer. Mention your brand naturally in the direct answers you write, so a quoted answer still carries your name.
- Concentrate on high-intent queries. In my experience, pricing, booking and “near me” searches still earn clicks. Comparison searches are different: Seer saw AI Overviews on 95.4% of the comparison-style informational queries it tracked, so aim to be cited there.
- Build branded demand, and ask loyal readers to add you as a Preferred Source: Google says people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source.
- Show up where AI looks. YouTube and Reddit top Ahrefs’ September 2026 US list of the sites most cited in AI Overviews, and LinkedIn matters for B2B, so build a real presence there.
- Measure the traffic that does arrive. Track conversion rate per session; visitors who click after reading an AI answer often arrive further along in their decision.
Why do branded searches still click?
Because someone searching your brand name usually wants your website, not a summary. Branded searches are the most reliable click-through traffic left, so the long-term zero click search strategy is to make more people search for you by name. That means PR, founder visibility, content distribution, podcasts and community: anything that creates name recall.
Brand strength seems to carry into AI answers too. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in AI Overviews, well ahead of backlinks. SEO budgets in 2026 are starting to look more like brand budgets, and that’s correct. Our guide to building a brand that AI models recommend covers the mention-building side.
Which searches still convert?
Bottom-funnel and local searches. While informational queries lose clicks, searches about prices, bookings and services near the searcher still tend to earn much healthier click-through rates, because the searcher wants to act, not just learn. Reallocate content effort towards those pages, and make sure each one converts the visit it gets.
For online stores, our ecommerce SEO services now put most of the content effort into category and buying-guide pages. For India-focused brands, queries that include a city name (“best CRM Bangalore”, “SEO consultancy Mumbai”) usually signal stronger buying intent, so they’re worth targeting with genuinely local pages.
Paid search is shifting too. Seer found paid click-through rates on queries with AI Overviews fell 68% between June 2024 and September 2025. A good Google Ads agency in India will move spend away from informational terms and towards searches where buyers still click.
How should you report in a zero-click world?
Change the scoreboard. Track impressions, AI visibility, branded search growth, conversion rate per session and assisted conversions from organic, and stop leading with average position and total sessions. Brands that update their reporting first usually update their strategy first, because the new numbers show where effort is actually paying off.
The zero-click scoreboard
| Old headline metric | Zero-click replacement | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Average position | Impressions and AI visibility | Search Console Performance and Generative AI reports |
| Total organic sessions | Conversion rate per session | GA4 |
| Click-through rate | Branded search growth | Search Console queries containing your brand |
| Last-click organic revenue | Assisted conversions | GA4 attribution reports |
| Referral traffic | Visits from AI assistants | GA4’s AI Assistant channel |
When you present these to leadership, tie every number to a business outcome. For example, pair “branded search volume up 28% quarter on quarter” with the matching movement in direct traffic and conversion rate. A board update built on that story holds up; the old traffic-and-rank story increasingly doesn’t.
GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot; it excludes Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode. If you follow a 20-minute monthly Search Console routine, add the Generative AI report to it.
What does zero-click mean for Indian local and service businesses?
It hits hardest where Google can answer directly: rates, timings, “near me” searches and definitions. For a local business, the win is a complete Google Business Profile that gets the call without the click. For service firms, it’s answer-first pages that get cited in AI Overviews with your brand name attached.
Our guide to the Google Business Profile factors that move the needle covers the first; our page on what GEO and AEO mean for Indian businesses covers the second.
What can you do this week?
Pull a 90-day Search Console comparison of impressions against clicks for your top 30 queries and sort by the widest gap. Those are the queries where AI Overviews and snippets absorb your traffic. For each one, either accept the impression-only outcome or move the page towards a higher-intent version people still click.
Within seven days, update your dashboards to track impressions, AI visibility, branded search growth and conversion rate per session, and brief leadership on the change. The reporting reset is half the strategy reset. If you’d like a second pair of eyes first, a free SEO audit is a sensible starting point.
This reset is the work I do most often as an SEO consultant in India for brands whose informational traffic has flattened: new dashboards first, then the content shift.
The verdict: can SEO still drive traffic when most searches end without a click?
Yes, but not the way it did in 2019. Zero-click search isn’t a problem to solve; it’s the shape of organic discovery now. The brands winning accepted that early and rebuilt around citations, branded demand and high-intent pages, then changed their metrics to match. If your traffic is down but brand searches and enquiries are rising, your zero click search strategy is working. If both are falling, start with the playbook above, reset the dashboards, and judge the results over two quarters, not two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What percentage of Google searches are zero-click in 2026?
SparkToro’s 2026 study, based on Similarweb data, found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (measured with a different panel). The figures are for the US. Informational searches lose the most clicks, while branded, local and ready-to-buy searches still click through more often.
Is zero-click SEO the same as GEO?
Closely related but not the same. GEO (generative engine optimisation) focuses on getting cited inside AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. Zero-click SEO is broader: it also covers featured snippets, knowledge panels and People Also Ask boxes. Most strong GEO tactics also help you win visibility in zero-click results.
Should I stop creating informational content?
No, but reduce the share. Informational content still earns impressions, brand mentions and AI citations, all of which build brand recall. The mistake is putting most of your content effort into informational queries while expecting the click-through rates of 2019. Aim for a more even split with bottom-funnel commercial content.
Which searches lose the most clicks to zero-click results?
Informational and question-style searches, such as definitions, how-to questions and quick facts, because Google can answer them directly. In Seer Interactive’s data, AI Overviews appeared on most question-format and comparison-style informational queries. Searches for a specific brand, a local service or something people are ready to buy still tend to earn healthier click-through rates.
How do I prove the value of zero-click impressions to my CFO?
Stop reporting traffic alone and report assisted conversions and branded search growth. Pull a 90-day before-and-after snapshot showing branded search volume, direct traffic and conversion rate per session. Many of our clients see higher conversion rates on the traffic that does arrive, because visitors land already pre-qualified by the AI answer. That’s the case you take to finance.
