What drives SEO cost

Cheap SEO: the red flags

One-time SEO vs monthly retainers

A one-time audit or fix-up is useful when a site has a specific problem, such as a migration or a traffic drop. Rankings for competitive keywords, though, come from steady content and authority building over months, which is why most SEO is sold as a monthly retainer.

How long until SEO pays back?

Most of our clients see meaningful keyword movement within 90 days. Competitive commercial keywords typically take 4–6 months. See how long SEO takes in India.

SEO price bands in India, explained

Quotes for "SEO" in India vary from a few thousand rupees to several lakh a month because the word covers very different amounts of work. It helps to group what you see into bands and ask what each band can realistically deliver.

Monthly bandUsually whoWhat it can realistically cover
Under ₹10,000Freelancers, very small agenciesBasic on-page fixes, a handful of keywords, directory listings. Rarely includes real content or quality links.
₹10,000 – ₹30,000Small and mid-sized agencies, senior freelancersA focused keyword set, technical and on-page work, Google Business Profile, steady link building for local and small national sites.
₹30,000 – ₹1,00,000Established agenciesLarger keyword sets, regular content production, digital PR, multiple locations or product categories.
₹1,00,000+Large agencies, enterprise programmesBig eCommerce catalogues, multi-country SEO, dedicated teams and extensive content and PR.

None of these bands is "right" on its own. A ₹15,000 plan that targets ten carefully chosen local keywords can return more than a ₹75,000 plan spread thinly across hundreds of terms. The useful question is always: which keywords, which pages, and what work each month?

How pricing models differ

  • Monthly retainer. The most common model in India. You pay a fixed fee for an agreed set of work each month. Good for steady growth; check the deliverables are written down.
  • Keyword-based packages. Price is tied to the number of keywords worked on, for example up to 10, 20 or 30. Easy to compare, but make sure the keywords are ones that bring enquiries, not easy terms nobody searches.
  • Project or audit fee. A one-time price for an audit, migration or recovery from a traffic drop. Useful when you have a specific problem.
  • Hourly consulting. Common with senior consultants who advise your in-house team rather than doing the work.
  • Performance-based. Pay per ranking or per lead. Tempting, but it pushes the provider towards easy keywords and short-term tactics. Read the fine print carefully.

Hidden costs to ask about

Before comparing two quotes, check whether each one includes:

  • Content writing, and how many words or articles a month
  • Link placement fees charged by publishers
  • Paid tools (rank trackers, crawlers, SEMrush or similar)
  • Developer time to implement technical fixes on your site
  • 18% GST, which many Indian agencies quote separately
  • Setup or onboarding fees

A cheaper quote that excludes content and links can end up costing more once you pay for those separately.

How to set your SEO budget

  1. Start from the value of a customer. If a new client is worth ₹50,000 to you over a year, two extra clients a month from search pays for most SEO plans many times over.
  2. Look at the competition. Search your main keywords. If the first page is national brands and big directories, expect a larger budget and a longer timeline.
  3. Count the pages you need. Each main service, location or product category usually needs its own strong page.
  4. Commit to at least six months. SEO compounds. Budgets that stop after two or three months rarely see the payoff.
  5. Keep some budget for Google Ads early on if you need enquiries straight away while rankings build.

What a good monthly report shows for the money

Whatever you pay, you should be able to see where it went. A useful report lists every page created or improved, every link earned with its URL, technical fixes completed, and changes in rankings, clicks and enquiries taken from your own Google Search Console and Analytics. If you cannot see the work, you cannot judge the price.
