How to Evaluate an SEO Consulting Firm

Use this scorecard to compare two or three SEO firms side by side after your first calls. Score each row from 1 to 5.

By Deep Bhardwaj, founder and senior SEO consultant · Updated October 2026

Evaluate an SEO firm on five things: proof of results, a clear process, the people doing the work, transparency in reporting, and fair terms. Score each from 1 to 5; a firm scoring under 15 out of 25 is a risk, whatever its price.

Check their own website

An SEO firm's own site is a free sample. Is it fast on mobile? Does it rank for anything? Does it publish its prices and process? Does it have real case studies?

Check how they handle AI search

Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations. Ask how the firm makes clients easier for AI assistants to find and cite. See what GEO and AEO mean.

Run a small first project

If you are unsure, start with an audit or a 3-month engagement and judge the firm on the quality of its work and reporting.

How to verify an SEO company's claims

  • Ask for Search Console screenshots showing the keyword, position, clicks and date range for a client in a similar sector.
  • Search the keywords yourself. Check whether the client site still ranks today.
  • Read Google reviews on the agency's Business Profile, not only testimonials on its own website.
  • Ask for a reference call with a current client.
  • Check the team on LinkedIn: do the people named actually work there and have SEO experience?

Reviewing a sample report

Ask to see an anonymised monthly report. A strong report connects work done to outcomes: a list of pages created or improved, links earned with URLs, technical fixes, and the resulting change in rankings, clicks and enquiries. A weak report shows a rank-tracker screenshot and a few charts with no explanation of what was done or what happens next.

Weighing price against value

Two quotes are only comparable if they include the same work. Line up the number of keywords, pages, articles, links and hours of technical work in each, then compare price. A higher quote that includes content and links can be better value than a cheaper one that leaves those for you to buy separately. See SEO cost in India for typical price bands.

Contract checks before you sign

  • Notice period and any exit fees
  • Ownership of content, accounts and data
  • What happens to links and pages if you leave
  • Monthly deliverables written into the agreement
  • Who you can escalate to if work slips

Running the scorecard with your team

Ask everyone who joined the calls to score each firm independently, then compare. Big differences usually reveal something one person noticed and others missed, such as a vague answer about links or an unclear reporting process. Agree the final choice on the total score and the strength of the written plan.

FAQs

Quick Answers

Verifiable results for similar businesses, a written plan, named experienced people, transparent monthly reporting, and fair terms where you own all accounts.
Not on price alone. A cheap plan that delivers spam links or no real content can cost more to undo.
Two or three is usually enough. Use the same questions and scorecard for each.
