How to Track Your Brand’s Visibility in ChatGPT and AI Search

You can’t improve what you don’t measure, and most businesses have no idea whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Mode recommend them, or what those assistants say when they do. The good news is that tracking your AI search visibility doesn’t need expensive software. Even the best AI SEO services start with the same thing: a fixed list of buyer prompts, checked on a schedule and logged in a spreadsheet. This guide shows you how to build that baseline, which free Google and Bing reports to add to it, and how to act on what you find.

Quick answer: Write 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask an AI assistant and run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode on a fixed schedule. Log whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described and which sources are cited. Then add free data from Search Console’s Generative AI report, GA4’s AI Assistant channel and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Key takeaways

  • A fixed prompt list, run the same way every time, is the heart of AI visibility tracking; single answers vary too much.
  • Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, open to all websites since 31 August 2026, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • GA4’s AI Assistant channel, added in May 2026, groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, separate from Google’s AI features.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite your pages, and the grounding queries behind those citations.
  • Most fixes are unglamorous: identical business facts everywhere, listings on the sites AI cites and answer-first service pages.

What does AI search visibility actually mean?

AI search visibility is how often AI assistants mention your brand for the questions your buyers ask, how accurately they describe you, and whether they link to your site as a source. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot as well as Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Track three separate things: a mention (your name appears), a recommendation (the answer suggests you as an option) and a citation (a link to your page as a source). You can be mentioned without being cited, for example when an assistant lists you from a directory page, and that difference tells you where to work.

If the terms are new, our explainer on AEO vs SEO covers how answer engine optimisation fits alongside normal search work. Google’s own position is that optimising for its generative AI features is still SEO, so the foundations don’t change. This guide is about measuring the result.

How do you build a prompt list for AI tracking?

Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers would actually type or speak into an AI assistant, in their words rather than your keyword list. Mix discovery, comparison, problem and brand questions, then mark the 10 to 20 that matter most to revenue as priority prompts to check every week. Check the rest monthly.

  • Discovery: “top dentists in Faridabad”, “best CA firm in Pune for startups”
  • Comparison: “[your brand] vs [competitor]”, “alternatives to [competitor]”
  • Problem: “my website traffic dropped, who can fix it?”
  • Brand: “who is [your brand]?”, “is [your brand] any good?”, “where is [your brand] located?”

Write prompts as full questions, the way people really ask. Google says people ask AI Mode questions nearly three times longer than traditional searches, and AI Mode now works in Hindi and seven more Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu and Marathi. If your buyers search in Hindi, add a few Hindi or Hinglish prompts to the list.

Which AI assistants should you check, and how?

Check the main four: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, plus Copilot if you sell to corporate teams. Run every prompt the same way each time, in a fresh or logged-out session, with your location set to India, so your personal history doesn’t skew the answers you see.

Consistency matters more than volume. Use the same wording, the same language and the same day of the week. Save a screenshot or copy of each answer, because next month’s answer will be different and you’ll want to compare. Note whether the assistant searched the web; answers built on live search usually show the sources they used.

What should you log each time?

Log the same five things for every prompt: whether you were mentioned, where you appeared in the answer, whether the facts about you were correct, which competitors were named and which sources were cited. A simple Google Sheet with one row per prompt, per assistant, per date is enough.

  • Mentioned? Yes or no.
  • Position: first, second, third and so on in the answer.
  • Facts correct? Name, location, services, prices, years in business.
  • Competitors named: which brands appear instead of you.
  • Sources cited: which websites the answer links to.

With those columns you can chart a simple share-of-voice trend: how many of your priority prompts mention you this month compared with last month. Our guide to building a brand that AI models recommend has more on measuring AI brand share over time.

What can Search Console, GA4 and Bing tell you?

They add hard numbers that a prompt log can’t. Search Console shows how often your pages appear in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, GA4 shows visits and enquiries from assistants such as ChatGPT, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often Copilot cites you. All three are free.

Search Console’s Generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode and breaks them down by page, country, device and date. Google rolled it out to all websites on 31 August 2026. It reports impressions only; clicks from these features stay inside the normal Performance report under the Web search type. If the report is missing, your site may not have enough AI impressions yet, or may be excluded from generative AI features in settings. It fits neatly into a monthly Search Console routine.

In GA4, the AI Assistant default channel groups visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. Google added it in May 2026, and it leaves out Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode, which still count as organic search. In the Traffic acquisition report, look at key events from that channel, such as enquiry forms, not just sessions.

ChatGPT makes this easier. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, and that your site must not block OAI-SearchBot if you want your content in ChatGPT’s summaries and snippets. Google doesn’t publish its full list of recognised assistants, so also check session sources such as perplexity.ai in case some visits land under Referral.

Bing Webmaster Tools covers Microsoft’s side. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite your pages, which pages, and the grounding queries behind them. Microsoft added intent, topic and citation share views in June 2026.

Which tracking method shows what?

Method What it shows What it misses Cost
Manual prompt log Mentions, descriptions, competitors and sources across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Mode Real search volumes; answers vary from run to run Free, but takes time each week
Search Console Generative AI report Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date The questions people asked, and AI clicks on their own Free
GA4 AI Assistant channel Visits and key events from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar assistants Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; answers that never led to a click Free
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, with grounding queries Google’s AI features and assistants outside Microsoft and its partners Free (preview)
Paid AI visibility trackers Automated prompt runs at scale and share-of-voice charts Access to Google’s internal systems; they sample answers too Paid

Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use “internal” Google metrics. No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems. Use these tools if they help your workflow, but be sure to evaluate their advice against our official guidance.

Paid trackers save time once you have more than a few dozen prompts, but they sample answers just as you do. Start manually, then decide whether a tool is worth the money.

How do you read the patterns?

Look at trends over four to eight weeks, not single answers. Three things usually become clear: which sources the assistants trust in your niche, which facts about you are wrong or out of date, and which competitors keep appearing instead of you, and why. Each one points to a different fix.

Sources are the most useful finding. In many Indian niches, assistants lean on directories, review sites, “top 10” lists, LinkedIn posts and Reddit or Quora threads. If the same directories keep turning up in your category, a complete listing on each is worth more than another blog post. We looked at which Indian directories still matter in whether Justdial, IndiaMART and Sulekha listings still help SEO.

Wrong facts are the most urgent. An assistant repeating an old address, a discontinued service or an outdated price costs you enquiries today, and it usually means the wrong version is still published somewhere: an old directory listing, a forgotten profile or a stale page on your own site.

What should you do with what you find?

Fix the causes, not the answers. You can’t edit what an assistant says, but you can change the sources it reads. Work through these steps in order, then re-run your priority prompts after four to six weeks to see what moved:

  1. Make your name, address, phone number, services and key figures identical everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. This is the same groundwork as local SEO, so it pays off twice.
  2. Get listed on the directories, review sites and “best of” lists the assistants keep citing, starting with the ones in your log.
  3. Add clear, answer-first sections and FAQs to your main service pages, and keep any structured data accurate. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT search covers the page-level detail.
  4. Earn genuine third-party mentions: guest articles, podcast appearances, helpful answers on Reddit and Quora, and coverage in your industry press.
  5. Check that your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, the crawlers ChatGPT and Perplexity use to show sites in their answers. Our Perplexity SEO tactics cover what earns citations there.
  6. Re-run your priority prompts monthly and note what changed after each fix.

What did our own baseline show?

When we ran a baseline for our own brand in Google AI Mode, we appeared for only a handful of our priority prompts, mostly “SEO expert” and brand questions. Several answers also repeated an outdated years-of-experience figure. That told us exactly what to fix first, and none of it needed a special AI trick.

We were not yet showing up for national “best SEO company” prompts. Those are the questions that matter most to us as an SEO company in India, so the fixes followed the list above: consistent facts across every profile we control, and listings on the directories those answers were citing. In our experience, few Indian small businesses track AI answers at all yet, which is a real advantage for those who start now.

The verdict: how to track AI search visibility without expensive tools

Start with a fixed prompt list, run it the same way every week or month, and log mentions, accuracy, competitors and sources. Add Search Console, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools for hard numbers. That combination tracks AI search visibility well enough for most businesses and shows you what to fix next. If you’d like a second opinion on your site first, a free SEO audit covers the technical issues and content gaps on your key pages.

Services that help with this

  • Technical SEO services: Crawler access, indexing and structured data, so AI systems can read and cite your pages.
  • Link building services: Earned editorial links and brand mentions on trusted publications, including reclaiming unlinked mentions.

TL;DR

  • Track 20 to 50 buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Mode on a fixed schedule.
  • Log mentions, position, accuracy, competitors and cited sources every time.
  • Add free data from Search Console’s Generative AI report, GA4’s AI Assistant channel and Bing.
  • Fix the sources AI reads: consistent facts, key listings and clear answer-first pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there tools that track ChatGPT visibility automatically?

Yes. Several SEO platforms now run prompts automatically and chart how often your brand appears. They save time at scale, but they sample answers just as a manual check does, and Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. A manual log plus free Google and Bing reports is enough to start.

How often should I check AI answers?

Weekly for your 10 to 20 priority prompts and monthly for the rest. AI answers change with model updates, wording and location, so look at the trend over several weeks rather than reacting to a single result. Re-run everything after a big change to your site or listings.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?

AI answers vary with the exact wording, your location, the model version, your chat history and whether the assistant searched the web for that answer. That is why a fixed prompt list, run the same way in a fresh session, matters more than any single answer. Track how often you appear across many runs.

Does Search Console show AI Mode traffic separately?

Partly. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, and it has been available to all websites since 31 August 2026. Clicks from those features are still counted inside the normal Performance report under the Web search type, so they are not separated out.

How do I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4?

Open the Traffic acquisition report and look for the AI Assistant channel, which groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links. Visits from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are not included there; they still appear as organic search.
